What have I recently finished reading?

The Iron Chariot by Stein Riverton translated by Lucy Moffatt

Voted #1 in a poll of the greatest Norwegian crime novels of all time, The Iron Chariot, a classic of the genre, is now getting a long overdue publication in English.

On a blazing hot summer’s day, holidaymakers at a guesthouse on a Norwegian island are shocked to discover a fellow guest has been found murdered out on a desolate plain. The nameless narrator, an author, was the last person to see the victim alive; shortly afterwards, he was disturbed by a noise like ‘a rattling of chains’. A local tells him this is ‘the iron chariot’, which is said to presage death.

A very interesting but strange story.  I enjoyed it but I did have to get round the writing style as it was quite different.

 

The Secretary by Renee Knight

I listened to this one as an audio book via my BorrowBox app, and really enjoyed it.  I also loved her other novel Disclaimer.

Clouded Vision by Linwood Barclay

Keisha Ceylon is a psychic. At least, that’s what she passes herself off as. The truth is, Keisha’s real powers have more to do with separating troubled families from their money than actually seeing into the netherworld. Keisha watches the news for stories of missing family members. She gives it a few days, then moves in, tells these families she’s had a vision, that she may have some clue to where these missing people are. And by the way, she charges for this service, and likes to see the money up front.

Keisha’s latest mark is a man whose wife disappeared a week ago. She’s seen him on TV, pleading for his wife to come home, or, if she’s been abducted, pleading with whoever took her to let her go. Keisha knows a payoff when she sees one. So she pays a visit to our troubled husband, tells him her vision.

Trouble is, her vision just happens to be close enough to the truth that it leaves this man rattled. And it may very well leave Keisha dead.

Love this author and found this in a charity shop recently.  This is one of the Quick Reads books and you can read it in under an hour but it is still as good as all the others.  It was a short concentrated dose of what this man is so good at.

Woman on the Edge by Samantha M Bailey

In a split second, Morgan’s life changes for ever. A stranger hands her a baby, then jumps in front of a train.

Morgan has never seen the woman before and she can’t understand what would cause a person to give away her child and take her own life.

When the police question Morgan, she discovers none of the witnesses can corroborate her version of events. And when they learn Morgan longs for a baby of her own, she becomes a suspect.

To prove her innocence, Morgan frantically tries to retrace the last days of the woman’s life. She begins to understand that Nicole Markham believed she and her baby were in danger. Now Morgan might be in danger, too.

Was Nicole a new mother struggling with paranoia?

Or is something much darker going on?

I’m reading this for a blog tour and I took it with me to Wales when we went to visit my father in law last weekend. I was really enjoying it but accidentally left it behind!!  However, he is such a good egg he has just posted it back to me! So I can get straight back to it.

What will I be reading Next?

I’m going to try and squeeze in another one or two before I need to start concentrating on my December blog tour reads.  If I have time I am going to try and get to:

Sorry For The Dead by Nicola Upson.  The eighth book in the ‘Josephine Tey’ series.

The House of Birds by Morgan McCarthy which I bought last week and sounds really good. Have had good reviews from other bloggers so hope to get to read it soon.
